Getting Ready for Winter: The Hudson Valley Homeowner's Insulation Checklist

August feels early to think about heating season. It isn't. By October, every insulation contractor in the Hudson Valley is booked, material lead times stretch out, and you're scheduling work in November if you're lucky.
Getting ahead of it now means you're warm in December instead of waiting on a call back.
Here's where to start:
Attic. If your second floor was uncomfortable this summer — hot, stuffy, hard to cool — your attic insulation isn't doing its job. The same gap that lets heat in during July lets heat out in January. One problem, two seasons.
Crawl space. If you noticed cold floors last winter or any musty odors this summer, the crawl space is worth assessing before temperatures drop. Sealing it now means it's conditioned before heating season starts.
Rim joists. One of the most overlooked areas in any home. Rim joists sit at the top of your foundation wall where the floor framing meets the exterior, and they're almost never insulated in older Hudson Valley homes. Closed-cell foam on rim joists is a relatively small job with a noticeable impact on drafts and heat loss.
Exterior walls. If you're planning any renovations this fall — additions, gut renovations, siding work — that's the window to insulate wall cavities before they're closed up again.
You don't need to do everything at once. A free assessment tells you where your biggest losses are so you can prioritize.
